Ouai Dry Shampoo Foam Review

6
I was browsing around in Sephora a few weeks ago and spotted the Ouai Dry Shampoo Foam ($28) right in the front of the store where all the new products are. Now, I'm not really a dry shampoo person...I still have yet to try one that smells good and doesn't leave a powdery, sticky, residue in my hair. I usually end up just washing my hair every other day and if I'm starting to look greasy on the second day, I just put it up in a bun.

But the idea of a dry shampoo foam was so intriguing to me! I stood there in front of the display and imagined freshening up my hair with no white powdery residue...then I squirted a little into my hand and it smelled so fresh and clean. I was sold and couldn't put the bottle into my basket fast enough.

From the Sephora website:

This quick-drying, waterless cleansing foam removes oil, product excess, and buildup. Perfect for second, third, or fourth day hair, it leaves strands feeling cleansed, conditioned, and ready to be re-styled as desired.

According to the directions, you're supposed to shake the can well and dispense a ping-pong ball sized amount into your hand, and rub your hands together. Then you're supposed to work it into your scalp just like a regular shampoo and continue working it into the rest of your hair for about 30 seconds until it dries.

It has the light, airy consistency of a mousse and when I first worked it into my hair, I was concerned because it made my hair feel damp...but it does dry, you just have to continue to rub it in until your hair no longer feels damp.
Before & Afters:
For the purposes of this blog post, I decided to take before and after photos so you can see exactly what my results were. For reference, I have fine hair that's dry on the ends and starts getting oily on the scalp on the second day.

Day 1:

Day 1 was my usual style...I gave my hair some volume with a large barrel curling iron after I finished blow drying.

Day 2:
By day 2, my hair was starting to look much flatter and greasier at the roots with those annoying little short hairs at the top doing their little frizzy thing. I wanted to put it up in a bun or ponytail so badly but I didn't want to make a crease in my hair knowing that I had to take a third day photo with the dry shampoo foam. At least I didn't have anywhere to go! :)

Day 3:
On the third day, I worked the Ouai Dry Shampoo Foam into my roots first and then spread whatever was left into the rest of my hair. It took a good minute or so of working it in to feel like it actually dried. Once I was done, I was impressed! It didn't look quite as good as Day 1 hair, but it had more volume and movement than my Day 2 hair and didn't have that greasy, clumped together look...it looked softer and more like just-washed hair.
My only complaint is that even though it looked better, my roots felt heavy, as though I had used a conditioning treatment and didn't rinse it all out. Still, it allowed me to go out and run errands with third-day hair...something I normally don't feel comfortable doing. Success!

Day 3...Update:

Throughout the day, my hair continued to have that heavy feeling and by 4:30 pm, my hair looked really greasy again.
Overall, I was initially impressed by the Ouai Dry Shampoo Foam but as the day wore on, the results didn't last for me. It could be because my hair is fine-textured and this product works better on medium-to-thick hair types. My hair can get weighed down very easily which is why I rarely even put product in it after shampoo and conditioner.
I think I would still use it if I needed to go somewhere for just a few hours and didn't have time to wash my hair...the initial results allowed my hair to look almost freshly washed, it just didn't last unfortunately.
If you have medium to thick hair, it might work for you! Have you tried this yet? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

  1. Yikes! So disappointing for such an expensive product. My hair sounds a lot like yours. Have you tried Batiste? The Topical scent smells like coconut and summer and is my jam!! But they also have one for dark hair that doesn't leave the white residue. My favorite way to use it is to spray it very liberally in my hair before bed. Its usually all smooshed in by the time i wake up and i don't have to do much with it. I swear it has changed my life!

    1. No I haven't tried that one yet but that sounds right up my alley (I'm a little coconut obsessed, haha)! I'm definitely putting it on the list, thanks for the tip. :)

  2. I have pretty much the exact same hair type as you and I unfortunately had somewhat similar results. I think your initial results were better than mine as my hair took a very long time to dry and I felt like I barely saw a difference. It hurts my heart that this didn't work because I am absolutely obsessed with the scent. I might return it to sephora to try out another ouai product with the same scent

    1. Aw...it really is too bad because you're right, the scent is amazing! I bought it on a whim and when I got home, I looked up the reviews online and was disappointed that so many people didn't like it. I tried to use very little in my hair after I saw some reviews that said it took forever to dry and while it did take a minute or so, it did finally dry all the way for me. It could also be that my hair is super dry from bleaching and just soaked it all up, haha! It's a bummer that it didn't work because it's a great idea...I hope someone improves on the formula and maybe one day there will be an option for us fine-haired girls. :)

  3. I have normal hair, not fine, and a lot of it. I don't have problems with thin looking hair but like to Extend days between washing. I enjoy the Bumble & Bumble Pret a Powder and especially the Clairol Hair Food kiwi scented dry shampoo. I think I like the Clairol one the best. It gives some volume and feels light if I make sure not to spray too much in one spot and work it through my roots well. Smells great, too!

    1. Hi Susan! Thanks so much for sharing your favorites, I'll be sure to add those to my list of new ones to try, especially the hair food. I've looked at it quite a few times at Target, so next time I'm there, I'll grab one! :)
