September Anti-Haul

8

With the Holiday season approaching, there are more new makeup releases than ever, and there's no way I can possibly try everything that piques my interest. So before I jump too quickly, I've been thinking long and hard about my purchases, saving my money for the things I know that I'll really use.  That's where today's Anti-Haul comes in! As always, I'm not saying that any of these products are bad...just that they're not right for me in one way or another (too expensive, too similar to other things I have, etc).

Let's take a look!
Holiday Sets

I've sworn off those big bulky holiday sets this year. It seems like every September, I get sucked in to getting eyes, lips, and face all in one palette but the truth is, there's nothing unique about the color selection and the quality is often not the same (particularly with eyeshadows) as their permanent collections.

Also, in past years I've told myself things to justify the purchase like, "these will be great to travel with because they have everything you need!" You know how many times I've actually traveled with a holiday set? Zero.
I recently came across my Too Faced Christmas in NY palette from last year and realized I used it once, maybe twice and it's been sitting in the drawer ever since. So these are a big pass for me.

The only reason I would have for buying one is if I had a niece or other young family member who was just getting into makeup...I think it would make an awesome starter kit. When I was a tween, my Grandma used to get me those Markwins holiday makeup sets (the big black plastic ones from the drugstore that hardly had any pigmentation) so I wish these were around when I was a kid! I would have been in heaven.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit Vol. 3

Photo: Sephora.com

I purchased the previous two versions of the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit Palettes, but I'm stopping myself with this one. Don't get me wrong, it looks gorgeous, but I just don't find myself using them on a regular basis. Not to mention, they're very expensive ($80) and the pan sizes are small. I would much prefer to purchase one single shade of Ambient Lighting Blush or Ambient Lighting Powder that I know I'll use regularly. I currently use Dim Light as an allover finishing powder quite often as well as the Luminous Flush blush...but I almost never dip into either of my Ambient Edit palettes, even though they're beautiful to look at.

Becca Gradient Glow Highlighter

Becca's latest highlighter is a blend of their existing highlighters, Bronzed Amber, Moonstone, Opal, Rose Gold, and Topaz, and I guess I just don't really "get it".  It's very pretty to look at but from a practical standpoint, the shades are too thin and close to each other to use each one separately. Also, I see only one shade that would be light enough for me to use, so I think that swirled together it just would be too dark.

Lorac Mega Pro 4

You guys know how much I love Lorac, but the only reason for me to purchase the Mega Pro 4 is to complete my collection since I have the previous versions. It's a huge palette and I don't use my other ones enough to warrant purchasing this one. Also, I feel like a lot of the shades can be duped in other palettes and the ones I don't have remind me of the Lorac Brunch palette, which I passed on because I'm not a pastel fan. I do tend to reach for the original Pro Palettes and Unzipped palettes because they're smaller in size and more cohesive in their color stories. These larger ones just get too overwhelming for me!

Fenty Beauty

I might get some heat for saying this, but I have no desire to try Fenty Beauty. Nothing against Rihanna at all...I think it's awesome that she's doing her thing and having 40 foundation shades is impressive! That being said, her face products seem to be matte finishes which, as a dry-skinned person is something I try to avoid. The rest of the line, just isn't all that interesting to me. I have way too many highlighters and while the universal lip gloss looks pretty, it doesn't seem like anything that can't be found at the drugstore. Shrug.

Colourpop My Little Pony Collection
Photo: Colourpop Cosmetics on Instagram

I love that Colourpop is doing something different than the same old warm palettes everyone else is coming out with. But...I already have the Pur Cosmetics My Little Pony Collection and I know that I just won't personally wear these kind of shades much. Also, this collection looks like it was meant to come out in the Spring! Even if I were into these colors, I probably wouldn't be reaching for them this time of year.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Prism Palette

Anastasia makes some of my favorite eyeshadow palettes of all time (Modern Renaissance and Master Palette by Mario), but the new Prism Palette just isn't speaking to me. As I get older, I don't reach for a lot of shimmer (definitely not glitter) and this one has 7 shimmery/glittery shades (if it were just 1 or 2 I might consider it). Also, I do like a lot of the shades in here but the yellows are really throwing me off...if there were one yellow it wouldn't be an issue but there are three and I just don't use yellow much.

Kylie Cosmetics Fall Collection
After I purchased the Kylie Royal Peach palette and some of her lip glosses, I decided I'm done with Kylie Cosmetics. They're made in the same factory as Colourpop (and are similar quality) but Kylie's are way more expensive. If I were a fan of Kylie's and wanted to support her, I might consider purchasing for that reason but otherwise I don't think that these products are anything super special. That also goes for the Kim Kardashian West line...I'm just not interested. :/

Well there you have it! That's my Anti-Haul for September...I hope you enjoyed it!

Also, if you haven't checked out my Ulta Haul video on my YouTube channel, I'll link it below...I talked about a few of the products I won't be buying at Ulta while I'm there (so it's kind of a haul/anti-haul video). :)

  2. I love my Hourglass edit palette from last year and do use it. I also have the limited edition strobing blush palette and love it. I won’t be buying this year’s though. I’m trying to control my purchases, too!

  3. I'm in total agreement with everything you wrote, plus you are giving me strength to resist buying other products I know I won't really use or like. Hope I'm done with the overly bulky palettes -- I'm rediscovering the joy of eyeshadow trios and quads. :-D

  4. I agree with all of this except for the Colourpop My Little Pony stuff. I bought a bunch of stuff when it came out, but I know I will use it. If you know that they aren't your style, then I can understand not buying. I always appreciate your honesty!

  5. I am so with you on the Fenty. I'll never try that. I can't stand Rihanna, her music, and I'll never forget her wearing my hockey team's jersey as a dress for fashion. If you're not a Sens fan, leave them out of your glamour!

  6. I loved this post! Finally someone that agrees with my on Fenty Beauty. I don't have the interest in trying anything - right now the foundation seems nice and if I got the opportunity I would like to try it (it's not available in Portugal) but I'm totally fine not having any product from her line. I never bought anything from Kylie but I don't want to! I also agree on the Too Faced set, I'm done with Too Faced sets until I see something really different. xx

  7. Just hopping in for the first time to say thank you so much for this post! I've read a lot of anti-haul blogs and posts, and they always seem so angrily negative and leave me feeling vaguely depressed. You struck a great balance of highlighting the good points about the brands and explaining your decisions without the angry rant!
