I Actually Like Wearing Sunscreen Now | Cotz Review

11
I know all-too-well how important it is to wear sunscreen on a daily basis...getting skin cancer at 30 years old wasn't something I ever expected to happen. It was an eye-opening and scary experience and one that I definitely don't want to repeat, and yet I still find myself skipping the sunscreen too often. The main reason is that most formulas are just so...unpleasant to wear. They're thick and sticky and smell weird, leaving my skin with a shiny film that sometimes still shows through my makeup. Even the "dry-touch" formulas have that telltale sunscreen scent and just don't do anything for my skin.

I recently discovered Cotz Face Natural Tinted Sunscreen SPF 40 ($19.99 at Ulta) and it's a total game-changer! It's actually a primer and a sunscreen in one, and it's unlike any other SPF I've tried.
First of all, it's a natural mineral-based sunscreen (vs chemical) with no preservatives, oils, or scent. It has the whipped mousse-like feel of a silicone-based primer and fills in pores and texture beautifully with a soft matte finish (no more shine!). The version I have has a hint of tint which pretty much disappears into my skin when I blend it out (they also have a non-tinted version if you're paler than I am) and I find that while it doesn't add much coverage, the overall texture of my skin looks and feels so smooth and soft, and makeup applies beautifully on top!

If you have oily skin or don't like the thicker feel of a primer, Cotz also makes another version called Flawless Complexion which has more of a lotion-like feel and disappears into the skin with no greasy feel and no scent. I also have that one as well and you honestly don't even know you're wearing it! It's dermatologist-recommended for blemish-prone skin and won't clog pores.

Overall, I'm amazed that more people aren't talking about Cotz, so I really wanted to get the word out there. I've been wearing the Face Tinted Primer for the past week straight and I actually enjoy applying it because it makes my skin look and feel better, not worse which is a first for me when it comes to sunscreens!

Currently, they're BOGO 50% off at Ulta, so it's a great time to stock up.

Have you tried Cotz? I'd love to hear about it!

  1. I just found Cotz not to long ago and was surprised to open your blog this morning and see this post! I have to give my two cents on it because it is a great product. I'm an avid gardener and am outside for hours every day. I got sick of using chemical sunscreens and bought this one on a whim because it was all natural. It felt heavenly the first time I applied it and I often wear it alone because it smoothes out my skin like a filter and I don't have blemishes to cover up anyway. Well let me just tell you that after using it since June, my face is about 4 shades lighter than my body- it works! I know I should be applying it to my body but I mainly am just trying to avoid facial aging and I still want to get that Vitamin D! I'm so glad you love it too, I read your blog every day.

    1. Hi Judy, thank you so much for your review I'm so glad you love it too! I'm not sure why more people aren't talking about these but for me, it feels like I'm not even wearing sunscreen...totally amazing! :)

  2. I have the lip balm with mineral sunscreen and find it very useful for protecting my lips when I know I'm going to be outside. I prefer the idea of a mineral sunscreen, in case I ingest it, and that's hard to find.

  3. I love this product. I'm not sure how I first found out about it( maybe a beauty box??). I love it though. Btw, what is a "sponsored" post? If a company sends you product, isnt that sponsored?

    1. I'm so glad you love it too! A sponsored post is when a company pays you a cash amount (in addition to sending product) to write a positive post (basically like an advertisement where you only say what they want you to say). With a sponsored post I would have to sign a contract agreeing to say their specific talking points. BUT if it's not a sponsored post, I'm not being paid (other than getting the products sent to me) and there's no contract. I'm free to say whatever I want to about the product (positive or negative)and I'm not under obligation to post about it at all. So even though the company sent me the products, I am free to write an honest post. I generally don't take sponsorships unless it's a product I'm already familiar with and would recommend to you guys anyway. I would just feel weird about it otherwise. :)

    2. Jen that is so interesting, I never knew that sponsored really meant paid like an advertisement! It's eye opening to know that because like Randi said, I always thought a post was considered sponsored if the brand sent you the products. I had no idea that some companies actually pay bloggers to say nice things, basically. That seems very shady to me because it's like a veiled advertisement! It does make me feel better to know that on non-sponsored posts you can feel free to share your own opinions even though you got the products for free. I am assuming that some bloggers will still say nice things to stay on the PR list though. Have you ever noticed a brand dropping you for saying something negative?

    3. Hi Isabelle! To be completely honest, when it comes to getting free products, I think that temptation is definitely there to say nice things about them even though we're not obligated to. But for me, that's just not right. I mean, of course I would love to stay on a brand's PR list, but I know that saying nice things about a product I don't like will hurt me in the long run, so I don't do it. Let's say for example that Anastasia Beverly Hills had sent me the Subculture palette and I raved about how wonderful it was. Then you guys went out and spent your hard earned money on it and were disappointed because of all the fallout and saw all the other negative reviews. You would be upset and probably wouldn't trust my reviews anymore, which in turn, would cause me to lose followers. To me, it's just not worth it. I also just wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing that I was pushing crappy products on you. In my experience, most brands won't drop you from the list due to a negative review, especially if you keep it tactful and don't bash the product in an unprofessional way. Some companies even welcome the constructive criticism and use it to make their products better. If I don't like a product's formula, I may compliment something I do genuinely like about it, such as the packaging or shade range to keep the review a bit more balanced. There have been a few times where I had nothing nice to say and didn't hear from that brand again but it just comes with the territory. Most of the time a brand won't tell you that you're off the list but all of a sudden they just stop sending stuff.

  4. I got a free sample of Cotz ages ago and fell in love. Super pale, so untinted version for me! There is just so much magic about it-- 1) sunscreen but not smelly or shiny or sticky, 2) nice as a primer, even holds up to my T-zone well, 3) does not irritate/break out my sensitive skin at all. Coupons + sale at Ulta, it is a totally reasonable price too.
